Earlier this year, Apple announced that it would begin shifting its entire Mac lineup from Intel processors to their new in-house silicon. At a November 10th special event, Apple announced that Mac minis will be some of the first Macs to make that transition. We are currently taking orders for colocation and dedicated minis. The new minis are arriving weekly and will be deployed as we receive stock. We will be stocking all the M1 models listed below.

This post answers some common questions that customers have asked.

QUESTION: Can older versions of macOS be installed on the M1 minis?
ANSWER: We will only be able to install macOS Big Sur (11.0) or higher.

QUESTION: Will the 2020 M1 Mac minis replace the 2018 models?
ANSWER: The higher-end 2018 Intel i5 and i7 Mac mini models will still be sold along with the new 2020 M1 minis, and we will continue to stock both model years. The 2018 minis are a great alternative if you require more than 16GB of memory.

QUESTION: Can alternative operating systems be installed on the 2020 mac minis?
ANSWER: As of now, ESXi, Linux, and Windows operating systems are not compatible. We can still install alternate operating systems on our 2012/2014 dedicated minis.

QUESTION: Can the internal SSD be upgraded at a later date?
ANSWER: The new M1 minis have an integrated flash drive that cannot be upgraded.

QUESTION: Can the memory be upgraded at a later date?
ANSWER: The new M1 minis have integrated memory that cannot be upgraded. All of the M1 minis that we stock are maxed out at 16GB.

QUESTION: Since ESXi isn’t currently supported, what virtualization options are recommended?
ANSWER: We recommend VMware Fusion (paid), Oracle VirtualBox (free), and Anka (paid).

QUESTION: What external backup options are available?
ANSWER: We have 2TB and 4TB external hard drives available. We also have various other Storage Vault options available.

QUESTION: How do the 2020 M1 Mac minis compare to older minis in benchmarks:
ANSWER: The 2020 M1 Mac minis clock higher than any other Mac minis in CPU performance (chart courtesy of GeekBench):
