Change your SSH port easily.

One of our customers recently linked us to their blog where they have nice collection of OS X Server related articles. Some of the articles sparked a few ideas and we put together a nice little script that will quickly (within seconds) change the port that SSH listens on. Enabling remote SSH access on a Mac is simplistic and easy. Under the sharing preferences there is a ‘Remote Login’ option that requires a single click to be activated. This allows for some powerful remote access via the command line. SFTP file transfers and remotely diagnosing a distressed Mac with...

Back it up, Back it in, Let’s begin.

Last week the 2012 Mac mini was released. The upgraded processor, memory speed, and USB 3 ports are great upgrades, but we feel the most important upgrade was that the Mac mini Server now including two 1TB hard drives. The Server model also includes Server.app and a quad-core i7 CPU. Attaching a 1TB USB3 drive to a standard model will serve the same purpose (we have these drives in stock). Note: there is a $10/month charge for external drives. RAID has not been a great option since OS X 10.7 Lion. Using a mirrored RAID removes the restore partiton feature. Also if the RAID status is...

Setup WordPress on Mountain Lion in 1 minute.

When OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion debuted we wrote a tutorial describing how to install MySQL. We mentioned that we would follow up with a WordPress installation post. However, we felt that we could do better than that, so we wrote a script that handles the tedious parts of setting up WordPress. As long as the MySQL installation was performed, this script will perform 95% of the WordPress installation on a OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion machine that is running Server.app. The script will create the database and database user, download the latest version of WordPress, and place the files in the proper...

Do not run this program if you have any VLAN interfaces...

Upgrade to Mountain Lion.

Over the past few weeks we’ve had customers inquire about upgrading their machines to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. There are a few known issues that we’d like to share along with some tips & tricks. Keep in mind this is just what we’ve come across so far and there very well may be other issues we haven’t seen yet. In general it’s a good idea to wait to a 10.x.1 or 10.x.2 release before upgrading, especially a remote machine. *NOTE* Always make a backup before attempting an OS upgrade! Upgrade Notes: - Download Mountain Lion from the App Store -...

Drag and Drop files to your mini with OS X 10.8.

A while back we posted how to easily upload files to your Mac mini by using SFTP which uses the SSH protocol. With OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the Screen Sharing app has a few new features. One being the Shared Clipboard which is automatically enabled when you connect to another OS X 10.8 machine via Screen Sharing. It keeps your clipboard in sync, reducing the need to manually push/pull your clipboard contents between machines. Note, if you use other programs that sync clipboard data such as Synergy this Shared Clipboard function can cause issues. The Shared Clipboard can be disabled under...
